4 stars All present and correct

In brief, this is probably all the 10CC most people will ever need. Unlike most other bands listed on this site, 10CCs best songs are their most commercially successful ones. In broad terms, their album tracks tend (in my opinion!) to simply be potential singles which were not quite good enough to be let out on their own.

Here we have a fine collection of pretty much all the band's hits (yes "I'm not in love", "Rubber bullets", "I'm Mandy, fly me" etc. are all present and correct) plus a trio of Godley and Crème's singles successes and the pre-10CC Hotlegs classic "Neanderthal man". Interestingly, the Hotlegs song is placed last on what is otherwise a chronological collection.

The only track which was not a single is the three part classic "Une Nuit a Paris", from "The original soundtrack". Anyone who is at all familiar with the work of 10CC will however be entirely aware of the piece.

The 10CC name was of course continued by Gouldman and Stewart after the departure of Godley and Crème, and no less than four tracks by the post-split line up are included here. For me, these are the weakest of the entire set.

In all though, this is a fine collection of the best works of 10CC. If you are unfamiliar with the band, my recommendation would be to pick this album up, and stop there. On a technical note, all the tracks here have been remastered for the collection, offering a discernible improvement in sound quality.

4 stars I normally don't review "Best of" collections, but this is collection has a great collection of 10cc's songs and is a good way to try them out. It contains songs from their best years, and, for the most part, does collect the best tracks during the years that it covers. It has their extremely popular songs like "Rubber Bullets", the beautiful "I'm Not in Love", the clever and equally great reggae infused "Dreadlock Holiday" and the poppy "The Things We Do for Love". It even has their later hit "Cry", which was actually done on Godley and Creme's album. It also has some great songs that are not quite as recognizable, but still some of their best work like "I'm Mandy, Fly Me", "The Wall Street Shuffle" and "Art for Art's Sake".

Of course, there are some weaker songs that I feel would have been better replaced by other tracks like "The Dean and I" and "Good Morning Judge". The band could have been better represented by "The Second Sitting for the Last Supper" or the "One Night in Paris" suite and we probably would have had a 5 star "Best of" collection here, but we can't have everything (but that's why they make playlists).

10CC always leaned on the poppy side of progressive rock, but they always made a "thinking person's" pop with a lot of sarcasm in their lyrics. Their music leans heavily on the influence of The Beatles, and many times helped us hear what type of music The Beatles may have made if they stayed together through the 70s and 80s. As much as I enjoy the debut album and "The Original Soundtrack" album though, I find this album very entertaining and just the right sound when I want to listen to progressive rock on the light side.
