3 stars Anticipation Rising

While Pure Reason Revolution prepare their much anticipated sophomore album (much anticipated, at least, by ME), they released this new song through their MySpace webpage. What can I say about this track? At just under 4 minutes, it isn't very explicit in terms of showing just how much the band evolved. It sounds like something they could have done before their first album, for what we know... It does not differ a lot from their previous work, and could easily fit in their debut album.

Or could it?

Generally, it sounds very similar in composition - lush vocal harmonies, heavy riffs, tasteful electronic effects. However, somehow, it seems more radio-friendly than most of the tracks present on The Dark Third. Obviously I'm not going to make judgements on what is to come, regarding their next work, based solely on 3:37 of (new) music. As a single release it serves its purpose - it entertains and leaves your mouth watering. As a progressive rock track, I must admit I've heard a lot better by them. As a plain alternative rock song, so far I like it very much. And whatever the direction they choose to take on their second album, I'l still be waiting in anticipation. Eagerly.

2 stars Pure Reason Revolution - 'Victorious Cupid' 2 stars

This is a single that Pure Reason Revolution released before they hand out their sophomore effort.

The song is starkly, but not greatly contrasted to the debut. Everything that this band is noted for is still there, effects, crunchy guitars and vocal harmonizations. The driving force on this song is the guitar, which is the unusual element, pertaining to why I think it is slightly different.

I wasn't particularly impressed. I certainly thought the guitar was better when it was laid back and less distorted. The vocal work certainly wasn't catchy as anything on 'The Dark Third'. As another fellow reviewer stated, this is a pretty good alternative track. Not really prog, at least in the sense of their former album.

3 stars This song sounds a slight bit heavier than their first album, but still very much in the same style as their debut. There are lots of vocal harmonies, just like on the Dark Third album. The style hasn't changed much and the song is every bit as good as any of the songs off of the Dark Third al ... (read more)
