EVENTUALITIES

When a band talks up their own music, I really can't help but get excited. As I am learning, however, the ones that usually talk up their own music are also the ones that are quite unoriginal. Atlas Volt, unfortunately, is one of these bands. They talk about being truly progressive, original, and without limits or boundaries. Anything goes. Yet, I find this EP to very dull and unexciting. In fact, I don't hear any experimentation at all!

Don't get me wrong, this EP is okay. The music consists mainly of acoustic guitar work with a harmonized vox. The first few songs generally do not waver from this: In fact, any two-bit indie rock band could have written the first few songs. However, after that, the last two songs show some promise, especially "Mother Nature's Infanticide". This track showcases about the only experimentation on the EP, and it displays this more in its strange lyrics and weirdness than in any innovation. The rest of the EP? Standard acoustic rock with a little prog twist.

Overall, I wish bands would stop claiming to be the next evolution in prog, and just make great music. This EP is okay, but certainly doesn't even approach the level of innovation that the band claims.
