PROG REVIEWER
3 stars 20-Year Chronological Run-Through pt. Seventeen: 1979.

FAROUT were a Finnish instrumental fusion group that released only one poorly sold album in the late 70's rapidly changing musical climate. Several years ago I had an honour to write new liner notes for Svart Records' vinyl reissue, with the help of an email interview with guitarist Jarmo Nikku. In the band bio here I tried to include the most essential bits of information in a limited space. Instead of sharing further information on the band and the making of this album, in this review I concentrate on the music itself.

Initially the group was inspired by CAMEL whose gig they saw in 1977, and with further additions in the line-up, they increasingly drew influence from mainly American funk-oriented fusion of the time. The funk flavour dominates the lively opening track 'Nassau Boogie'. As a composition it may lack originality -- and to a certain degree this concerns the album as a whole -- but the musicianship is enjoyable. 'Daybreak' is a serene composition by Ismo Homanen, a beautiful dialogue between his electric piano and Ike Kallio's Micro-Moog, and a much needed step away from the lively overall tone.

'Muppet Dance' starts with a ringing alarm clock. This funky piece features Camel-like, soaring melodies of electric guitar plus soloing in turns from several other members as well. On the passionate title track the guesting jazz maestro Pekka Pöyry plays soprano saxophone to a great effect. 'Walrus Jump' is a bright uptempo piece with fast virtuosity especially on acoustic guitar; JUKKA TOLONEN comes to mind. Pöyry guests on flute.

The album continues in the same manner: funk and Camel influences in variable measures, perhaps more emphasizing the funk towards the end. Excellent playing and some very nice melodies here and there, but on the long run a bit single-minded in the emotional sense. If you're fond of funk-flavoured instrumental fusion with virtuosity, this album will certainly please you. 3½ stars rounded down, because in the end it lacks a wider spectre of moods and emotions.
