Review by kenethlevine
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Prog-Folk Team
3 stars Having somewhat more in common musically with British Isles folk rock than most Finnish prog, this project of one Tim Reus does adhere to the earth centered philosophy of many of his compatriots, but that might simply be a sub genre characteristic in general. The essence of SMOKESTACK FAERIE is the low key low register voice of Tim Reus, crystalline and rarely heavy guitar and bass, and folk based melodies. Comparisons to JETHRO TULL, STRAWBS, RED JASPER, HORSLIPS, balladic WISHBONE ASH, BIG COUNTRY and DIRE STRAITS can all be justified. This is a pleasant listen to be sure, with epic opener "To a Candlelit Wasteland", the rooted pop rock of "Your Storm", and the Topi Karhunen-propelled (but non metallic) "The Moth" all being worth your investment. The rest is somewhat inconsistent but this remains a promising debut from an artist who will hopefully not fade for some time.
