Formed: Hungary 2003
Status as of April 2020: Active

The Moon and the Nightspirit are Agnes Toth (vocals, violin, woodwinds, piano, percussion, Jew's harp, dulcimer, harp, keyboards, percussion, recording engineer, mixing, mastering, music, illustration) and Mihaly Szabo (acoustic guitar, bass, woodwinds, percussion, zither, acoustic bass, kalimba, dulcimer, vocals, recording engineer, mixing, mastering, music, lyrics) The duo has been crafting a distinct artistic signature in the realms of pagan folk, dark folk, and neo-medieval folk music which is reflected not only in their music but also in the unique visual universe that illustrates their work. They have been greeted with growing enthusiasm since the release of their 2005 debut album on Equilibrium Music, "Of Dreams Forgotten and Fables Untold", and the early shows that followed, which included an appearance on Hungarian National Television.

Later, and in support of their second, third and fourth albums, The Moon and the Nightspirit toured throughout Europe supported by two live musicians, Gergely Cseh (bass) and Gabor Vegh(percussions). Playing in smaller clubs and large festivals alike, including prestigious events such as Trolls et Legendes (Belgium), Wave-Gotik-Treffen (Germany), Festival Mediaval (Germany), Faeriecon (USA), Cheoyong World Music Festival (South Korea), Castlefest (The Netherlands) or Wacken Winter Nights (Germany) the band shared the stage with names like Blackmore's Night, Corvus Corax, Arcana, Faun, Negura Bunget or Wardruna, and gradually conquered a prominent role in the Pagan/Folk scene.

The lyrics of their debut album were mostly in English while it also featured two titles in the Hungarian language. The softly melancholic album has been compared to the music of Ataraxia and Chandeen. The second album was released in 2007 and is completely sung in Hungarian. During the supporting tour through much of Europe they played in festivals such as Wave-Gotik-Treffen (Germany) and Castle Party (Poland).

In 2009 the band released their third album Osforras, a more facetted work that focuses on the "wise elder" and natural mysticism. It has been compared to the Pagan folk of Omnia but was said to be more transparent for the listener. In 2014 they signed a long term contract with legendary German label Prophecy Productions. Their latest album as of 2020 was "Metanoia" (2017).

3 stars Prolific Hungarian duo "The Moon and the Nightspirit"'s debut occupies the inclusive tier shuffling between BLACKMORE'S NIGHT and LOREENA MCKENNITT, substituting predominantly violin for harps and other acoustic instrumentation. The group's moniker and album title elicit a longing for connection to ancient earth centered gentility in a world run amok even before 2020. And indeed the overall mood is appropriately somber and hypnotic with gusts to delicately defiant. "The Secret Path" is one of the better examples, though the intro is so mystical that I question whether it might have been developed better without lyrics. "Pagan" plays upon a bouncier rhythm than heard elsewhere and is better for it. The main issue I have here is the lack of a buildup and ultimate release that distances the satisfying works from the simply good. I don't feel there is any progression; almost every number would be just as effective in compilation as here, actually more so, because the MOON And THE NIGHTSPIRIT have hit on something here, perhaps just not insistently enough to secure it in place.
Thanks to kenethlevine for the artist addition.
