The Slow Light biography
Hailing from Adelaide, the Slow Light are the brainchild of Australian musician and songwriter Jack Bolingbroke, formed in the late 2010s. The Slow Light soon blossomed into a full band, consisting of Bolingbroke (vocals, guitars, synthesizers), Morris Ewings (bass), Rory Amoy (drums), Tom Pearce (guitars) and Nathan Churches (piano, keyboards), all close friends who've previously played together in an assortment of groups. The quintet takes primary inspiration from the crossover-psychedelia of earlier Porcupine Tree, along with the atmospheric alternative rock of the Pineapple Thief and Riverside, along with a healthy appreciation for classic prog like Pink Floyd, Eloy and Genesis and electronic acts such as Jon Hopkins, Carbon Based Lifeforms and Shpongle.

Currently unsigned, the Slow Light have digitally self-released one full-length and three EPs through their Bandcamp, each produced by Bolingbroke. Their debut EP, Cinema of the Mind, appeared in early 2020, recorded when the rest of the backing band were session musicians; a live-in-the-studio version of the EP was issued later that year. Ewings, Amoy and Pearce became full-time members by the time of their 2022 LP, Liminal (though Pearce was absent on the album). Where their first two releases were instrumental, Liminal is a self-described concept album with cryptic lyrics detailing a period of depression and grief in Bolingbroke's life. Churches, an auxiliary member who appeared on Liminal, officially joined in the album's wake. The Slow Light again reverted to an instrumental unit for the 2023 release Sessions, another live studio document of an unedited improvised jam.

4 stars Initiated by Jack Bolingbroke (vocals, guitars, synths) THE SLOW Light is a band from Adelaide, Australia, that evolved from a solo project to a true collective. Also comprised of drummer Rory Amoy and Morris Ewings (bass) they could release their current studio album 'Liminal' in 2022. And that's really differing, as it is the first one to include vocals. Currently they are even enhanced to a five-piece, due to second guitarist Tom Pearce and keyboarder Nathan Churches being involved. That offers the ability to implement their sound on a stage too in full blow. The formation process, and the result as such, is realisizing a way to express emotions. It's a concept album that reflects on a timeline of events and experiences.

Like many other music creators Bolingbroke has composed a very personal record, trying to send a sonic rollercoaster on the journey. 'That look you had in your eyes ...', exemplarily to note the heartfelt soft ballad Three Years Later. Wonderful acoustic guitars are available during the course of Denouement. This song definitely needed multiple attempts to reach for its finesse. Other outstanding tracks are The Hourglass and the following title track, both with proper jamming potential. In sum, the band is offering six entertaining songs here, a cleverly engineered blend of art rock and psych/space featuring prospering guitar work and massive spheric synths.

Thanks to gordy for the artist addition.
