Rolf Zero biography
Formed in 1998 in the vibrant neighborhood of New Farm, Brisbane, Australia, Rolf Zero emerged as an amateur instrumental garage band comprising of Cris VAN ANDERSON on guitars and keyboards, Cecu PAUTA on drums and Dani LEERO on bass.

Their early days were filled with jam sessions and experimentation, as they tinkered with their gear in a self-made studio.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of classic rock DEEP PURPLE, LEDd ZEPPELIN and CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, they delved into the realm of hard rock classics, honing their skills and cultivating their sound.

It wasn't until 2005 that Rolf Zero took a decisive leap forward, venturing into the realm of original composition.

They found themselves captivated by the progressive rock sounds of the '70s, finding inspiration in the works of bands such as CAMEL, PFM, PINK FLOYD and JETHRO TULL. Embarking on their first project, they crafted a medieval tale centered around a powerful and affluent king who chose to forsake his riches and live as a humble beggar. Writing and recording several tracks, they laid the foundation for their musical journey.

Over the next few years, Rolf Zero continued to compose and record, with a series of tracks taking shape and two full albums ready for the mixing and mastering stage by 2010.

However, the band mostly indulged their creative impulses within the confines of private jam sessions.

While Dani Leero occasionally ventured out to perform live gigs with other bands in the Brisbane area, Rolf Zero remained a well-kept secret, hidden from the public eye.

With the unexpected arrival of the Covid-19 lockdown, Rolf Zero found themselves with ample time to reflect on their musical archives.

Determined to share their work with the world, they seized the opportunity to release their material on streaming platforms.

The debut album, aptly titled "Rolf Zero", emerged from the depths of their early years.

Mixing together various low-quality files and some mp3 recordings, they sought to preserve the original sound and the charmingly naive style that defined their formative phase.

Unconcerned with perfect tuning and synchronized tracks, the album encapsulated their early essence. Following this retrospective release, Rolf Zero turned their attention to their second album, "Tsunami." Initially written in 2007, the band decided to remix and remaster it in 2022, offering a fresh take...

Rolf Zero Symphonic Prog

4 stars Not knowing where Rolf Zero would go next for their third album, I was really hoping these guys would improve their craft much more after the dramatic improvement their sophomore had over their debut, especially considering that both albums were released only a month apart. It might not have been a dramatic improvement, but it's there. This album takes a more straightforward and occasionally more hard-rock oriented look at prog, but the real strength here comes from the vastly improved melodies. Any standard prog behavior is backed up by a very strong sense of melodic progression that overcomes their previous albums. There's one other major flaw that has to be addressed: the tango intro, since it's a full three minutes long, feels like an actual song, and is out of place with the rest as a result. Otherwise, this album's quite the strong addition to modern prog, and this third album has brought me to the point where I truly wish more people knew about this band.

4 stars Released one month after the debut, Rolf Zero's next album didn't seem to have the time needed for the band to further develop their sound. At least, that was my first impression. On top of all that, I wasn't that impressed with the Rolf Zero debut album, and when I saw that the RYM ratings for this second album were worse, I expected this to be a much worse practice run than before. Imagine my surprise when I found myself encased in a magical aura that takes me all over the prog world. Now this is halfway to prog, maybe being more of an "art rock" album due to its constantly accessible melodies. But the genre-to-genre progression goes all over the 70's rock spectrum without ever losing the flow in anyway, shape or form. There are songs that take me to the medieval times in the same way Thick as a Brick did, and there are bits that are classical enough to put me in a ballroom, and there are even a couple jazzy bits that take me right into a coffee shop. And boy are the melodies much healthier. In fact, a few of them are genius when put together.

So basically, this album feels like a complete tribute to 60's and 70's classic rock. I think they really managed to accomplish something that might not be very original, but very spiritual. As far as prog goes, I would put this in the same league as Alan Parsons' Tales of Mystery and Imagination as well as King Crimson's Thrak. This gives me hope for their future albums, which I will be slowly checking out among all the neo and symphonic stuff I'm spending my time with.

3 stars A rather obscure band, Rolf Zero belted out several albums in 2022, which isn't necessarily a good sign. In my opinion, he only band that can potentially pull that five-album-a-year feat is maybe King Gizzard. So I wasn't surprised when I finished it and found it to be quite underdeveloped. For example, the seven minute epic, Courtiers in the Court of King Rolph, is made up of a few shorter songs; no, not parts of a song, several shorter songs. There are the pauses and total shifts in tone and sound. Most of these songs feel like repeated basic prog riffs for the sake of getting a practice run in. Obviously there's ability to play, especially considering that the album tried to tackle a lot of different areas of symphonic prog variety and maintained a fairly consistent flow, but in the end, this album ended up nothing short or long of "just okay."
Thanks to rdtprog for the artist addition. and to projeKct for the last updates
