Open the Paintbox biography
'Open the Paintbox' is an Italian Neo Prog band, inspired both by the great classics of the genre and its evolution over time.

Formed in Messina in 2005 from the meeting of keyboardist Fabrizio Tuzza and guitarist/bassist Giovanni Costantino, the initial project focused on creating original instrumental music, blending vintage and modern sounds. In 2007, they began working on a concept called 'The Sirius Mystery', which they completed in 2013 and later revisited in 2015.

This concept was based on the mysterious Dogon people and the application of their ancient astronomical knowledge to depict the Sirius star system via a mixture of rituals, dances and masks. The resulting album was an important experience for the duo's musical growth, but the lack of opportunity to express themselves through their songs was evident.

This all changed after they met vocalist Angelica Esposito in 2015, when the project shifted towards the creation of more elaborate and refined suites, with alternating vocal and instrumental sections. The lyrics, written alternately by the three members, explore philosophical themes aimed at rediscovering a deep connection between humanity and nature, between humankind and the divine, in an increasingly massified and skeptical society.

Starting with their first song, 'Starlight', later included as a bonus track in the debut album 'Lapse of Time' for thematic continuity, the band worked on numerous projects that they would later develop - before fully dedicating themselves to the creation of this album in 2024. A further album called 'Planting Trees on the Moon' is is currently in progress, with release expected sometime in mid-2026.

Review by FloatingSeal

4 stars I really loved the album. I listened to it with a nice drink, and the music created a truly immersive atmosphere ? one that felt dreamlike and profound. I'm particularly fond of how the music reflects on the theme of time as an inner dimension, something deeply personal and emotional rather than linear. Each track unfolds organically in the "lapse of time" of the album, allowing space for introspection, and the interplay between the instruments and vocals feels thoughtful. You can notice echoes of classic progressive rock ? Genesis in particular ? mixed with an individuality that make this album stand as an interesting addition to the contemporary prog scene. Overall an engulfing meditative experience delivered through music.

4 stars I appreciated a lot the album "The Sirius Mystery" by Open The Paintbox. The interplay between guitars and keys is mesmerizing: cinematic, spacious, sometimes meditative, sometimes urgent. There is a sort of mathematical beauty in the structure, but also a raw emotional thread running through it all. This is definitely not background music: it demands attention and invites interpretation and introspection to catch the concept of the work and appreciate all the little gems here and there in the tracks. In summary, listening to it is deeply rewarding, since the sound and the atmospheres bring freshness and sincerity into the prog scene. I definitely recommend this work.

5 stars Listening to Lapse of Time by Open The Paintbox felt like embarking on a journey. From the very first notes, I was completely drawn in. Angelica Esposito's voice moved me deeply, floating above rich textures and haunting melodies. The keyboard work is especially outstanding. As for the guitar lines, the choice of the notes is very mindful and colorful. I especially appreciated the timing of the solos and the tone. The 27- minute title track left me speechless, as if I had lived a lifetime in a little less than half an hour. There is a rare sincerity in this music that touched something spiritual within me. Absolutely recommended.
