Extrovert biography
Formed as BIG TROUBLE in 1993 in Irkutsk (Russia), the band (Alexander Aidarov - vocals, Max Popoff - bass, vocals, Valeriy Shukevich - guitars, Yuri Tomisch, then Dennis Popoff - drums) played hard'n'heavy-oriented material. From 1995 to 2005 they were the main accompaniment group for Irkutsk Musical Theatre's rock-operas ("Jesus Christ Superstar", "Juno and Avos", "The Star and the Death of Joakin Murieta" etc).

After the release of a debut album "Four Elements" in 1999 BIG TROUBLE changes the name into STIHIYA. Elements of progressive metal becoming more obvious in their music, and Aidarov leaves the band. Two new members (Dmitry Iskchakov - kybds and Vladimir Antipov - vocals) help the band to form their new style - technical yet emotional progressive metal with beautiful poetic Russian lyrics. Instrumental side-project AGARTA ("Under the same sky" CD released by Starless rec. in 2003) showed the continuing progression of musicians' skills and songwriting talent. Despite some DREAM THEATER-like moments, EXTROVERT (new band's name since 2005) has its own sound and style. The album "Making the Ocean Awake" (Blacksmith prod. 2005) proves it easily.
After Antipov's leaving the new line-up (Boris Golik - vocals, Alexey Bayev - drums, Dmitry, Max and Valeriy) made a recording of some new songs' demo versions for future release (scheduled on 2007).

2 stars Having in mind how good and versatile the original music of this Russian band is, this cover album is really very unnecessary. The problem is not that the songs are neither prog in their originals, nor are they interpreted in a prog manner by Extrovert. The fact that all of them are really really well-known songs that have been covered million times before is also not the greatest burden here. But when you do so - when you are doing a cover album full of hard rock hymns - you better... no... you are OBLIGED to do them as differently as possible. Or at least a little different. I have been always seeing the point of doing a cover in the effort to add something new, something fresh, something just yours to the composition, to the feeling and to the meaning of the song. None of this is to be found on this album. These are just 13 mot à mot re-recorded famous songs with perhaps a better studio quality and a bit more modern equipment. This is pointless, really. I was quite unpleasantly surprised, cause I like their original material quite a lot and was expecting something way better.

Although it is really professionally played and good sounding, for me one star is too much. Especially when I know what the band is capable of. Two stars just because it's not trash, musically.

4 stars Heavy fusion? LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT's lost tapes?

Guess not ;-) .This is instrumental side-project of EXTROVERT's musicians, originally released under the name AGARTA. Very good half-metal, half-fusion tracks, filled with various shifting moods and good melodic feeling. Pretty rare item now, but if you find it, you won't regret! The title track and "The Autumn Garden" with flute are probably highlights there, but other tracls deserve to be mentioned as well...Excellent addition to any Prog Collector's collection, though EXTROVERT's album is better anyway ;-)

3 stars First of all, this is not Prog yet. Second - it's very rare thing to get! I guess it's easily to find some lost DUN or HENRY COW lost tapes then a "listenable quality"- version of this one!:-)

Released under the BIG TROUBLE name back in 1999, "Four Elements" is a good and enjoyable Hard/Heavy-Rock edging Prog sometimes. Some of pieces were lately rearranged for EXTROVERT's release (as long as I heard).I gave it 3 stars mainly due to its drive - very good songs, they ROCK!!! Professionalism of the band can be easily seen - no wonder they play Prog now. Not recommended, just my personal passion ;-)

5 stars Well...that's pretty odd to see a 5 star-rating from me for a Prog-Metal album.Believe me, it worth it!!!

The best Russian Prog-Metal band have strong influences from DREAM THEATER's SFAM and Train of Thought. But also you can hear a bit of Scandinavian Prog in organ passages in "At the Gates", a traditional "bard" intonations in "Updoors" (awesome ballad with great "heavy" midpart) and even death-metal-like riffs in some instrumental parts.Maybe, that album has nothing too much experimental, but the main thing EXTROVERT has is SENSE OF MELODY.You can easily "hum" every song right after the first listening - including their complex signatures and rhythm/tempo changes!!! "The Cage" is my favourite here - great refrain, very memorable,it makes you sing along every time you hear it!!! "The Fight" and "I'll get back" have so many parts, instrumental and vocal, but you'll never get a feeling that epics are overloaded with music.Only closer to the album's end you may get bored A BIT, but it's a matter of taste. Also it may seem that there's too much lyrics - Vladimir is a great singer (I wonder how their new one sounds like), but this amount of lyrics not always allows him to show his voice.BTW, the lyrics are very poetical and philosophical - not every Prog band has something related!

Highly recommended for those who are to discover Russian prog and forall Prog Metal devotees - this release won't disappoint you,it has everything you want from PROGRESSIVE METAL!!!
