Red Star Revolt biography
RED STAR REVOLT is a band based in Denver, Colorado; and was formed in 2007 by Aaron Nava (bass, vocals) and Clutch (guitars). These two founding members started writing songs; where the main goal was to make creative and innovative music. When they had made 13 tunes they felt were satisfactory, it was time to get hold of a drummer; Dino Cuneo; to start recording these songs.

The end result was a self-titled album released in 2008, exploring a style the band themselves describes as "infectious melodies and punishing riffs interspersed with passages of instrumental jams and space rock psychedelics".

WHY IS THIS BAND LISTED AT PROGARCHIVES:
US outfit RED STAR REVOLT explore a brand of music combining features from acts like THE MARS VOLTA, KING CRIMSON and TOOL (sans the metal tendencies); and were quickly approved for inclusion by the heavy prog team.

4 stars A charming aquaintance this debut album by US outfit Red Star Revolt.

They aren't the most complex of bands out there - driving bass lines provides most of the momentum throughout this affair; and while the guitar is used to provide a variety of different expressions - from subtle and careful wandering acoustic patterns to intense distorted, staccato hammering riffs - the guitar more often than not comes across as an embellishment here, and seems to have a more important role in contrasting the light vocals (think Radiohead or Muse but without the whining) than in providing melodic themes throughout. Indeed, the dominant expression from the guitar are various forms of staccato riff patterns; and although many of them contain a melody as such it's the vocals that carry and form the most distinct themes on this production.

The compositions are slightly quirky in form; somewhat unpredictable, often with several stylistic expressions but never really complex nor adventurous. The band seems to have a lot of fun in throwing in musical references to other acts though; and fans of Rush and Led Zeppelin are amongst the ones who'll have fun spotting Red Star Revolt's nods in the direction of these influences.

A charming affair overall; and although not an album that will please everyone it's worth checking out by those who might appreciate a dark blend of art rock and hard rock with leanings towards indie rock and punk.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
