Wejah biography
Founded in São Paulo, Brazil in 1982 - Hiatus between 1988-1994 - Disbanded in 1997 - Reformed n 2004

The story of Wejah dates back to 1982 when the band was founded by Eduardo Miranda (guitar), Nelson Sanchez (vocals), Jorge Sanchez (bass) and Vladimir Augusto (drums), originally under the name Bandeira Rasgada. This incarnation of the band dealt with mostly strait forward hard rock music until the band came to the realization that they wanted to do something a little more complex. So they added keyboards to their sound and Henrique Valsésia (vocals and saxophone) to their roster - and felt it was time to change the band's name which would eventually become Ãsltima Geração and Renascença. Soon, they became known as the biggest underground group in Sao Paulo and headed into the studio to record their first album, and the name of the band would at last be finalized - Wejah. Unfortunately, this would not last long, and at the end of 1991 they disbanded. A limited version of the line up resurfaced in 1993 (which included a new keyboard player (Marcelo Perez) and vocalist (Maurício Freitas)) for some limited gigging, but this too would not last long. Exit Vladirmir Augusto and in his place came Alexandre Crescenzi. Maurício Freitas would also leave the band soon after, and they decided to take an instrumental approach to music, and by the end of the year recorded their second album, Senda. Unfortunately, the band would break up once more after this release, and with the exception of a failed reunion in 1998, it would not be until 2007 that the band would reunite.

So far Wejah has had a varied career, and while it has not been overly prolific they still have released albums that have received critical acclaim and managed to maintain something of an underground following in the Sao Paulo scene. The band is, at current, still active and touring, and talks have been circulated about the recording of a new album.

Recommended for anyone who enjoys spacey, jazzy, progressive rock that can best be described as Eclectic.

4 stars WEJAH / RENASCENÇA Álbum de estúdio, lançado em 1988

In the past 80's, when I started the ALPHA III project, I recorded 2 first LPS in different studios. Then I met Moisés Leite and started recording in a very beautiful and large studio, Juratel (USA Studios CAMPINAS S.P.). In order, I started LPS Production in S.P. with the foundation of Faunus by José Grijó. There, Sombras, the label's first LP came out. Then at JURATEL in Campinas they started a series of LPS recordings that were:

ALPHA III-Agartha ALPHA III-Ruinas Circulares ALPHA III-The Aleph ALPHA III- Temple of Delphos WEJAH-Renascença DJAM KARET(USA) The Ritual Continues ALPHA III -The Seven Spheres ALPHA III-Voyage to Ixtlan ( o último trabalho gravado neste lindo estudio em 1993, antes dele ser fechado e modificado) AMYR CANTUSIO JR (ALPHA III PROJECT/BRAZIL)

1. Espelhos (3:50) 2. Homens do Futuro (3:55) 3. Eventualidades (9:07) 4. Renascença (3:16) 5. Canone (12:30) 6. 2 stars Brazilian act Wejah begun life in 1982 as a Hard Rock band under the forces of Eduardo Miranda (guitar), Nelson Sanchez (voice), Jorge Moana (bass), and Vladimir Augusto (drums).By mid-80's the band had already changed a couple of names (Ultima Geracao, Renascenca), while Sanchez left the band to be replaced by Alessandro Miranda on keyboards and Henrique Rosa on sax/vocals.They managed to build a good fame in the Sao Paulo underground music scene and in 1988 they entered the studio as Wejah with the help of Amir Cantúsio Jr. (aka Alpha III) to record their debut for Cantusio's Faunus Records. It was eventually released on vinyl under the title ''Renascenca'' in 1988.

The album suffers from a bad mix and production, however the musicianship sounds quite decent, being a weird mix of Psychedelic/Progressive Rock with a touch of Electronic. The first couple of tracks are rather hypnotic Psych/Electronic pieces with mediocre vocals but a good use of electronics and organ, while the guitar sounds very flat. The first long track ''Eventualidades'' follows the same vein, opening with nice keyboard work, the guitar playing is smooth and almost HACKETT-like in places, there is a great spacey synth-led middle part in the vein of ALPHA III before the fine ending guitar solo and the warm choirs. The eponymous track will close the first side of the LP in a dramatic way with strong synthesizers, a spacey atmosphere and crying guitar hooks but mediocre vocals. The 12- min. ''Canone'' is more of the same.Partly guitar-driven and partly synth-based, this composition is build around electronic sequences, spacey synthesizers, one-dimensional long grooves, guitar explosions, boring sax soloing and rather bad vocals with the band once more showing some nice ideas totally incohesive to each other.''Poeta Terrestre, Poeta Divino'' will open with some percussion work to transmit into a keyboard/guitar-based groove with an elegant atmosphere, but the production, vocals and cheap-sounding synths do not help at all.

Unfortunately ''Renascenca'' suffers from series of black holes. The mediocre production, bad mix, below average vocals and flat synthesizers make it sounding like an amateur effort recorded at a basement than an album headed for the markets. However there are some interesting ideas the band delivers, from the good combination of guitar and electronics to some unique atmospheres their sound creates, that makes the album pretty listenable and saves it from being a totally forgotten obscurity...2.5 stars.
