Zed biography
US fusion act ZED started out sometime after the millenium; at first as a trio consisting of Scott Cleland (guitars), Ian Keldin (drums) and Phil Good (bass). The band has a strong connection to the Colorado Art Rock Society, and it was within the ranks of this organization that they found their missing fourth piece; one Alan Mallery (keyboards, saxophone).

Rehearsals, recordings and the odd live performance was on the agenda for the next couple of years; when progress suddenly came to a screeching halt as bassist Good left the band - the ancient enemies of all part-time musicians, work and familiy, making a brief but destructive appearance also for this outfit.

Zed once again turned to the Colorado Art Rock Society for help, and Jeff Smith (bass) was chosen to help the band in their hour of need.

More rehearsals, recordings and the odd live appearance was in store, followed by a sabbatical when Scott Cleland felt the urge to follow up on his other band project Singularity in 2006.

Come 2007 and Zed returns to action, and in the early summer of 2008 something bright and shiny is brought forth to the world by the band - their debut album You Are Here.

3 stars Another nice debut album that have come into my possession this release from US band Zed.

On this album we're treated to a very 70's tinged form of fusion - although in this case I'd say that jazzrock is a much more descriptive term for the musical contents, with an emphasis on the first half of the expression.

Instrumental and improvisational, with the sax as the key instrument, we're treated to slick and smooth songs with soloing, jazzy guitar licks and drums, wandering melodic bass lines and basically pretty much what you'd want to get from an instrumental jazzrock band looking back towards the 70's with their feet firmly planted in jazz territories.

A few musical surprises are thrown in though, the most inspired of these are at least one instance of shredding when the guitar is allowed to shine in one of the tunes.

Fans of jazzrock, fusion and liberal minded jazz fans have one to check out here.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
