Amoebic Ensemble biography
Amoebic Ensemble was founded in the 1992 in Providence, Rhode Island. They originally were composed of two bass players and a percussionist under the name "Space Heater" before expanding to a chamber group and changing their name to "Ameobic Ensemble". The band consisted of trumpet player Shawn Wallace, Paige Van Antwerp on drums, Laura Gulley on violin, Steve Job on Bassoon, Matthew Everett on Mandolin and bouzouki, Johnathan Thomas playing kitchenware/cans, and Alec Redfearn composing and playing accordion when they released their first album "Limbic Rage" in 1995. The band recorded Amoebiasis in 1997 and disbanded 2 years later. Amoebic Ensemble combined the complex progressive rock with cartoon-like music and are recommended to fans of Mr. Bungle or anyone who enjoys the lighter side of Avant-prog music.

Review by JazzFusionGuy

4 stars This group provides the most zany and bizarre music you could ever hope for. I bought this just because of the cover. I figured cover art like this surely represents truly whacked tunes inside. I was more than elated to hear this hard-to-describe but fun music ensuing, challenging all my jaded expectations. My kids and I used to drive round our neighborhood playing Raymond Scott cartoon tunes and looking for people that matched the music. That was a blast. Well, Amoebic Ensemble, soon became our soundtrack for laughter while cruising our small town. Rude to laugh at people? Whatever . . .

Limbic Rage is truly cartoonish, chamber orchestra antics -- pulled off quite well and with skill. Is it prog? No. Is it rock? No. This release is in a genre all to itself and well worth checking out -- especially if you think as an audiophile -- you have heard everything. You have not heard anything like this stuff! Recommended as mental floss.
