Masada String Trio / Bar Kokhba Sextet biography
Founded in NYC, USA in 1996

Working on Masada series albums in early 90-s, JOHN ZORN made some recordings using Masada material, but arranged for small orchestra. Later this 1994-1996 recordings were released at separate album under ?Bar Kokhba? name. This project was frozen till 1998, when new excellent double album was recorded. First CD was recorded by classical-cum-chamber of previous Bar Kokhba project musicians (Mark Feldman (violin), Erik Friedlander (cello), and Cohen, (bass)) under the name The Masada String Trio. Second album?s CD was recorded with another team of former Bar Kokhba project musicians ( in fact, The Masada String Trio plus Marc Ribot (guitar), Cyro Baptista (percussion) and Joey Baron (drums)), this new line-up was named as Bar Kokhba Sextet. The performing style of both groups is characterized by the use of improvisation (sometimes conducted by Zorn himself) and its use of the inflections of Jewish music that are part of the compositional language of Zorn's Masada themes.

Some years later The Masada String Trio released few more albums under own name.

4 stars 2nd February, 2023: John Zorn - Bar Kokhba (jewish chamber jazz, 1996)

For a man who's got 90% of his reputation through making noisy, abrasive, inaccessible, chaotic music, this sure is serene and pretty. It's also fairly ironic that I feel like it's the best thing he's done. It's not just a jazz record, the incorporation of traditional Jewish music, particularly touches of folk, often make you entirely forget the jazziness, before it comes back in to breathe soul into the compositions. It is very long, but there's something quite relaxing about it that means length isn't as much of a problem. The more I come back to it, the more I find myself enjoying different bits and pieces, and maybe in time I might love the whole thing, length and all.

6.8 (5th listen)

5 stars It's a bit strange, that one of the most attractive Zorn albums doésn't have many reviews!

Fisrt of all, it's double CD, in which Zorn by himslef is composer and producer only (no musician!). But the musicians and the music both are real Zorn/Masada.

For those, who is not very familar with Zorn music, I would like to say, that this album in it's musical content is pure Masada: say, Klezmer + modern Jazz. Music is absolutely perfect even for listener, who never heard about Zorn.

Bright Jewish melodies are used for jazzy constructions. But as all Masada, it isn't too much avant-jazz. Even more - I think this album is most acceptable of all Masada's.

Formaly the album is devided to two parts : first CD is named Issahar, and the musicians are Masada String Trio there. The second one (Zevulun) contains the music of Bar Kokhba Sextet, which in fact is the same Masada String Trio plus guitarist Marc Ribot and drum/percussion pair.

The music on both discs are similar, but second contains more complex arrangements, some pure jazz pieces. I by myself prefer the first one: more emotive, more natural. But the both are real gem for both Zorn fans and just regular jazz/fusion listeners.

Highly recommended!

4 stars Modern Jazz with a wide range of influences. Although I hear alot of things in this music that I've heard elsewhere, John Zorn does it in a way that transcendes the usual boundaries. I can expect fans of free jazz and Frank Zappa RIOisms to like this album, but I am not sure if this is a direction the symphonic- only crowd would want to go. Like many longer albums this one is at times pleasant, and at some times more difficult. The difficult patterns, however, will please the audience appreciative of more complicated and highly composed experimental rock and jazz.
Thanks to snobb for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
