Sri Aurobindo biography
SRI AUROBINDO were formed as a four-piece Baltimore rock outfit in mid-2000s. The four genies - Brandon ARINOLDO (bells, hand drums, tambourine, voices), Danny CHENAULT (drums, acoustic guitar), Mike ROMANO (keyboards, tambourine, sonic decimator pedal, bass), and Mike FURNIERE (flute, banjo, guitar) - have got motivated more than enough and tried to produce their original psychedelia with essence of east-oriented psychedelic music, progressive space rock, Krautrock, oldies, indie rock, or some ethnic music.

2009 was the golden year for them - the eponymous debut album and a grand EP "Return Into Earth" were released, both of which can amaze and craze lots of fans and reviewers. Their passion for novelty cannot die ... they got started to record the new album "Cave Painting" late 2009, and finally released in November 2010 via a Baltimore label Friend Records.

— First review of this album —
3 stars The story of SRI AUROBINDO got started with a heavy, twisted guitar kick.

Anyway already upon this work their psychedelia has been highly accomplished, their original Oriental Raga style, that they would shoot on the next work "Return Into Earth", has not entirely constructed yet, though. Let me say as follows; in "Return Into Earth" they could play very flexibly and pleasantly, but to say honest, they played very seriously and productively, didn't they? The first track Never Felt More Free has exactly such an atmosphere - sounds they scrupulously played with full of loud guitar noises and rampant shouts. Feel they tried with their aggressive explosion and shoot to stardom of psychedelic progressive rock. Despite of their ambition, delightful trippin' sounds should certainly represent their fulfillment of "peace".

Of course, they dropped a free psychedelic jam bomb onto us listeners in the brilliant song Somersaults In Thoughts, or amazingly oldie & goodie psychedelic keyboard flowers blooming fully in the last Paper Flower Sequence. And we can glimpse their ethnic essence studded around this album, with space-equalized voices and sounds - these elements can remind us why their band name should be SRI AUROBINDO, an Indian nationalist, freedom fighter, and yogic philosopher. I'm sure they can emphasize peace and freedom with the Indo spacey soundscape in their own innerspace.

What a promising debut, highly recommended.

4 stars They are named after an Indian guru and this tells us much about their spiritually flavoured music. Yes, this is way more than let's say simple Asian influenced hippie music celebrated around a campfire. 'Return Into Earth' is one extended song, maybe you can also claim jam. They provide a special vibe which is skilled, hard to describe - please listen on your own to get the appropriate impression. I assume this is recorded during one session and, if ever, only slightly reworked. A varied instrumentation including tribal percussion are the fundament for this meditative trip.

Echoing flute and banjo, acoustic guitar, decent backing keyboard patterns and pleasant drones, this all takes you away on a hallucinatory journey. Well - somewhere, gliding through the second half, just when you're probably running into danger to be lulled, it all surprisingly turns into another direction. They lose the laid back behaviour, fade into a heavy outraged excursion, switch into some weirdness headed by fuzzy guitars.

'Return Into Earth' represents excellent raga inspired psych prog music- this partially reminds me of diverse German krautrock outfits. An entertainig piece of work which is simply recommended - check this out!

4 stars (From PA blog "Japanese Progressive Rock presented by DamoX")

Michael Furniere, a multi-instrumentalist of SRI AUROBINDO, said to me in Japanese "Heiwa (Peace)". Yes, SRI AUROBINDO play that improvised and peaceful (heiwa-full?) psychedelia with their terrific skill and imagination for progressive rock.

Filled with their laidback flight and their improvised but well-cooperated play, this great huge sound-story named Return Into Earth goes forward like a flying eagle called SRI AUROBINDO. This story gets started with quiet percussion (Cymbal and Gong hits) and dry, surrealistic flute solo. As if a maiden or a nymph dances and gradually flies into the heaven... Exactly the percussion ensemble (double drum & percussionists are here!) with exotic (especially Oriental) mood in their inner space do have such an atmosphere, everyone can feel - it's right indeed, but I also feel that keen flute's and stumbling guitar's sounds are fascinatingly or magically comfortable. Of course trust me the bassist play strictly just as the pacesetter all of them...without steady rhythm section this spacey sound-story cannot burst in such a way. From the middle to the latter parts twin guitars keep growling loudly and construct complete psychedelic clouds in the sky where the "eagle" flies. And the guitars complete feeling the cool air, the eagle slowly tries to go down into the ground...calmly and solemnly.

Over 32 minute sound-story cannot be long and boring at all - let me call this absolutely Oriental Ambient-ish Space Rock with magnificence and magical toxin.

Peace - heiwa. :-)
