Big Robot biography
Norwegian band BIG ROBOT is a musical collective guided by the following vision:

"We are guided by NO restricting theories, NO harmonic boundaries, NO compulsive reliance on melodies (in fact, we shun them almost totally) nor any concept of meeting up to the taste or preferences of a market or even an audience. This music was produced for the sake of itself. There is no concept but the CON-cept."

Per Sjøberg and Ollis Christensen is at the core of this musical collective, and on their first album Joakim Langeland helped out as well. Other known members of this collective include Kjetil Manheim and Sanna Saarinen.

So far this experimental venture have issued one full length CD, Aquafit, the EP Horror Odyssee and the digital only single Heute Schnee. The first of these features German composer and musician Conrad Schnitzler, and the second of these is a collaborative effort with him.

3 stars This début effort from Norwegian outfit Big Robot comes across as one reaching out to a very select audience indeed.

Synths and electronics are dominating throughout, and if any other instruments are used they are well disguised. In other word this sounds like a purified electronic venture, albeit with frequent use of what appears to be old school instruments. There are many references to the first thwurps and bleeps explored some decades ago by the electronic pioneers.

What will scare away many potential fans is the approach here though. Forget melodies, forget harmonies, forget regular dissonances and disharmonies as well. Sound collages and audio constructions with machine-like sounds, static noise and a certain distinct space influenced sound is what offered up here.

If you've heard the sound of quasars and stars you should feel right at home with this album though, and those who enjoy the most experimental side of acts like Tangerine Dream should appreciate this one as well. And as Conrad Schnitzler is featured on the CD, fans of his might want to give this one a check as well.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
