Todtgelichter biography
TODTGELICHTER, a band with music nearly as interesting as their name, is a German experimental post metal band formed in Hamburg in 2002 by guitarist Frederic and drummer Tentakel P. The band started out as an intense black metal band. The band eventually was joined by vocalist Mort and they released a demo in 2003. With the addition of bassist Nils and second guitarist Felix, the band signed with Folter Records and released their debut full-length album "Was Bleibt..." in 2005. After the release of the album, Felix announced he was leaving the band, and he was eventually replaced with Claudio. 2007 saw the release of their second album "Schemen," which gained them an international audience after selling thousands of copies.

2009 saw the departure of long-time vocalist Mort, and Nils decided to take over vocal duty. This seemed to trigger a significant change in style, as the band's third album, "Angst", released in 2010, had a much more experimental and progressive sound. Although the traditional black metal groundwork was present, the band showed a significant willingness to experiment, fusing the black metal with post metal, shoegaze, doom metal, and many other genres into an experimental and progressive version of their old self.

The band's experimental and post metal influenced style of black metal will appeal to fans of acts such as FEN and ALCEST as well as fans of less "raw" black metal.

Todtgelichter Experimental/Post Metal

4 stars "Angst" is the 3rd full-length studio album by German black metal act Todtgelichter. The album was released in December 2010 by Aural Music/Code666.

The music on "Angst" is by no means "regular" harsh black metal, nor is it black metal of the symphonic kind. Instead Todtgelichter plays a very eclectic form of black metal with progressive ideas, raw male vocals, clean female vocals and an at times goth tinged atmosphere. The album is as mentioned very eclectic and you can easily go from a harsh section black metal section to a melodic progressive section to a female fronted section over the course of one song. This might sound messy to some, but Todtgelichter are succesful in making the transitions between styles work seamlessly. In other words the styles are brought together in a natural way.

The production is clean and powerful and should speak to those who don't want their black metal too filthy.

"Angst" is an album that has taken a while to sink in for me, but it's a grower for sure. it's not always music as eclectic as this works for me, but I think Todtgelichter are succesful at what they do. "Angst" is an intriguing album deserving a 3.5 - 4 star rating.
