Newspaperflyhunting biography
Founded in Białystok, Poland in 2006

The band was born when Michał Pawłowski (g, v), Krzysztof Sarna (d), and Krzysztof Gryc (g, v) decided to improvise some music together, curious of the result. The chemistry was there and gradually the music started to take a more definite shape. Soon Gosia Sutuła joined on bass and vocals and the first EP, Storytelling, was released in early 2008.

A year later Krzysztof Gryc was replaced by Jacek Bezubik, with whom Michał had played in an acoustic duo called We! Wtorek. Material from this transitional period comprised the debut album, no12listen, released in early 2012.

Not long after the recording sessions were finished, Beata Grzegorczyk-Andrejczuk (k) joined the band, completing the current line-up. It was not until the second full-length, Iceberg Soul, that the band gained some recognition, with positive reviews both in Poland and abroad, some airplay, and offers for their tracks to be included on compilations.

The album, recorded in late 2013 to early 2014 in Radio Białystok, produced by the band members themselves and engineered by Wojciech Bura, is an attempt to translate the band's live sound into the studio setting, retaining the contrasts, the juxtaposition of melancholy/emotion and rawness that lies at the core of the band's sound. Influenced by a wide range of musical and extra-musical artists, but mainly by their desire to channel their ideas into something of their own, the band has been recognized as one hard to pigeonhole, despite the relatively straightforward components of their sound and the Pink Floyd comparisons that accompanied the release of no12listen. The next album is in the works and, as always, newspaperflyhunting are happy to reach out to any new audience interested in their music.

3 stars NEWSPAPERFLYHUNTING is a Polish post-rock band that formed in Białystok in 2006. The band has released a number of shorter EPs and only a couple albums but so far the number of all combined is about 13. Following 2018's "Time Lost" the band returns as a four member unit with the next logically titled release TIME REGAINED. This one is officially an album but only clocks in at 35 minutes.

This release features five tracks and puts the rock in the post-rock equation with grungy guitar heft and heavy bass and drum parts although there is always a nice atmospheric accompaniment from the keys. In all honesty TIME REGAINED is more in the shoegaze department than anything but comes close to post-metal at times with the dirty guitar diction and post-rock meandering.

The atmospheres are dreamy and when the guitar fuzz is absent sounds rather psychedelic however the heavy grunge guitar yanks it out of dreamland and places it firmly in a shoegazy post-grunge sorta camp. The cyclical loops are hypnotic and and the cleaner guitar parts certainly exude a Mogwai sorta post-rock vibe. There are also some trippy sound effects thrown in from time to time.

The first two tracks are rather bleak and jarring however "Everything's Fine" is more melodic and features a large intro of clean guitars and piano rolls before breaking into power guitar chords. "Hallways" is a typical post-rock track with a Mogwai type template. The best track is the 12-minute closer "Another Island" which showcases excellent atmospheric buildups and more interesting guitar, bass and drum dynamics.

An interesting album but nothing spectacular. The vocals don't work for some reason. The range is limited and i really just don't like the vocal performances on this one. All lyrics are in English btw. Overall i'm not blown away by NEWSPAPERFLYHUNTING. There are interesting moments especially on the last track but more times than not it's too tame for my liking. This album doesn't make me want to explore further into the band's canon either.

3 stars Polish band NEWSPAPERFLYHUNTING first appeared as recording artists back in 2008, when they released an initial EP called "Storytelling". Since then they have released two additional EPs and two full-length studio productions. "Iceberg Soul" is the most recent of their albums, and was self-released by the band at the start of 2014.

Polish band Newspaperflyhunting are one of many outfits around that, by accident or design, appear to create a brand of post rock that draws in details from indie rock to flavor their material, and that they operate out from a post rock platform, or at least have a strong and distinct orientation towards that style, what sets them a bit apart from many others. Their delicate compositions with firmer, harder edged and darker intermissions and developments are interesting and often fairly innovative, but the end result suffers a bit from some key weaknesses that will limit their overall appeal. Still, an interesting band that has the potential to develop into a unit with a wider overall appeal, and one that merits a check by those with an interest in bands that incorporate indie rock and a liberal amount of post rock into their take on progressive rock.

Thanks to zravkapt for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
