Janne Schaffer biography
Jane SCHAFFER is an Swedish guitarist from Stockholm. He is known for session work with likes of ABBA, but also with Bob MARLEY and Tony WILLIAMS (JETHRO TULL) for example. In his solo work, besides pop music, SCHAFFER was a prominent composer of jazz influenced rock music since the 70's, managing to gather on one of his albums the whole of PORCARO family of TOTO fame, namely the 1978 'Earmeal' album. His similar adventurous output can be found in other bands he participated in, like SVENSKA LOD AB or BALTIK as an example of prog rock with more in line with the symphonic genre. In recent years, SCHAFFER is still an active musician with his group ELECTRIC BANANA BAND which was inspired by a children's tv show as well as working on soundtracks and other works, some of them which are released on his own record company Earmeal.

Janne Schaffer Jazz Rock/Fusion

Review by Squire Jaco

4 stars I have the first five Schaffer albums, and they are all worthy. This first self-titled album is a typical jazz-fusion affair in the style of Jeff Beck circa "Wired" and some of the Larry Coryell stuff coming out around that time. (Perhaps even a little Larry Carlton?) Janne Schaffer is a gifted and varied guitarist, and has a very capable backup band playing drums, bass and piano here (along with other guest musicians).

You'll get a little bit of funk in here, but mostly it's fusion-based guitar-led progressive rock with a little side of Swedish folk songs sprinkled in. And lots of variety in tempo and melody - nothing to bore you here. It's a shame that this Swede's music isn't as well known here in the States as it is back in Scandinavia, but it's still not too late to acquaint oneself...

It's very enjoyable if not entirely original. I'll go a conservative 3-1/2 stars.

Thanks to historian9 for the artist addition.
