Carcariass biography
CARCARIASS started life as a death metal band, created in 1991,originating from
Besançon,France. The current line-up is Pascal Lanquetin (lead and rhythm guitar), Raphaël Couturier (bass and vocals),Bertrand Simonin (drums) and Jérome Lachenal (rhythm guitar). The name CARCARIASS comes from Carcharodon Carcharias, the latin name of the Great White Shark.

In August 1994, the band recorded its first demo of 20 minutes on a cassette, composed of 4 songs + 1 intro.Through this demo, the band has acquired a certain recognition and it has played with bands in different concerts, notably with the Italian band SADIST, at the time of their French tour in March 1995,where CARCARIASS played as the opening act.

In 1995 the band started playing melodic brutal death metal, and in 1997 the bands sound evolved even further, when CARCARIASS started playing progressive, technical death metal. In February 1997,the band released its first album entitled "Hell On Earth".Then the band played throughout France with local bands and introduced CRADLE OF FILTH at Strasbourg in April 1997.

CARCARIASS is very well-known in France, and probably one of the best French bands specializing in technical and progressive metal. In September 1998, the band recorded and released its second album, entitled "Sideral Torment",and in 2002 followed that up with their third and best album to date,"The Killing Process".

In January 2004, Jérome Lachenal joined the band as a second guitarist, adding a new dimension to their sound, especially live. Now the two first CDs are freely available on their website, so if you do not have them, download them.CARCARIASS is currently working on their fourth studio album.

CARCARIASS play brutal, technical progressive death metal and are highly recommended to fans of this genre of music,

The Killing Process
Carcariass Tech/Extreme Prog Metal

Review by toroddfuglesteg

3 stars A surprising turn of events can be reported from France. Their grindmasters Carcariass has gone melodic.

Well, this band was really never a grindcore combo. Death metal was more their style until this album. And their basis is still death metal. But a lot of elements of melody and some industrial metal has also been introduced. Some would also say; deathcore. But the main impression is that this is a surprisingly melodic album which is really bordering to the prog metal genre. Some songs are also well into the prog metal genre. Some of the songs also reminds me about what Pestilence did on their excellent Testimony Of The Ancient album.

Unfortunate, the art of great songwriting has not been introduced into this album. But the songs here are still very good and I have found myself really enjoying this album.

Bravo and viva la France !

4 stars THird album from their catalogue named The killing process is in my opinion their best so far, and one of the true lamost masterpieces of the genre. Released in 2002 on small label Adipocere Records, The killing process hits with every note, excellent progresive/technical death metal of the highest calibre with some of the most great musicianship I ever heared on this kind of music, for that they desearve 5 stars, brilliant. The guitarist Pascal Lanquetin kick ass for sure, he done on some parts some truly amazing work, fantastic riffs and solos. Now, what I find little low point in Carcariass sound and overall music is the voice, the voice is little to paced, It's growling all the time of course, not realy bad, but the tone of voice is not one I really enjoy a lot and the drumer, while I find him very energic on their previous work, on alert all the time, on this album they change the structure, I mean the drums are more mature and clean in sound, but is not so fast and furious and all the time on alert like must sound the drums in this kind of music, try to imagine how fast and working all the time are on a Death record or Atheist, here is ok , but to laid back and paced, but not bad. So, some killing pieces are Burn In Peace, title track, opening one with some great bass playing, musicaly speaking worth 4 stars is more mature, more intristing like previous 2 works, only the drums and vocal in some parts drag down from being a masterpiece. I enjoy a lot this band and specialy this album, well playd progressive/technical death metal that keeps the flag high in this genre. recommended, fans of the genre will enjoy this album and band in general.

3 stars Carcariass is a technical/ progressive death metal band from France with almost 20 years career in this bussines, they release so far 4 studio albums, this is their second one from 1998 named Sideral torment. The album was issued at Impacts Records and was a step on , musicaly speaking face their debute. Growling vocals of course, like old death metal school no clean vocals interluded, it happens to be a good thing, very tight musicianship and above all a pleasent album all the way, realy. I know this band since they rlease their third album from 2002 and had high expectation with each album they release, because is one of the bands from this side of death metal, the perogressive one, where I find truly a great work by each musician , not only growlings and chainsaw at every second. Now Carcariass are very technical, imagine you combine Atheist with Death but with a much deeper voice then on those two - and you got Carcariass, fast riffs, very well done, intristing playing. Long pieces for this kind of music, something usual after all, because the band tries and succeded to capture what is strong in this style, long instrumental passages, strong druming and great musicianship overall. I will give to Sideral torment,, 3 stars for sure, good album but I think their next one is their peak and one of the greatness in this technical/progressive death metal. Fnas of the genre must take some time and take a listen to this band worth it, belive me.

2 stars Carcariass has moved on from the death metal light on their first two albums (I have yet to hear their third album) and matured into a melodic progressive metal band.

That is........ Carcariass still does the death metal growl vocals. But the music on this album is pretty melodic. They are also pretty much like Pantera too with a lot of deathcore chugging guitars and guitar solos. The guitar solos reminds me alot about Death. Hence, Carcariass has moved into a landscape previously occupied by Pantera, Death and surely dozens of new deathcore bands.

The quality is decent throughout and Carcariass. A song like Threshold To Madness is a good one. The rest is pretty much filled to the brim with cliches and pretty conformist melody lines. If you want a surprise and some fresh takes on music, you are not getting it from this album. I have heard it all before and I am pretty bored by what I get here. The musicianship is good enough, but the songs lacks both originality and sparkle. Hence my verdict.

2 stars Carcariass continues on from where they left it on Hell On Earth, their debut album.

I get tonnes of Cannibal Corpse associations when Distributed Thinking slams through the speakers and devours the airwaves. And that is exactly where Carcariass sets out their stall for a large part of this album. But they also leans pretty strongly towards some more melodic stuff too. Cannibal Corpse's excellent Gallery Of Suicide album springs to mind. But Carcariass is even more melodic than that. Not that they stepping on Genesis or Camel's toes in the melody stakes, but I get the feeling that this album is Cannibal Light.

You also get the normal death growls, both the distorted guitars and the thrash guitars, a medium speed, blast beats and the thundering bass. Death metal in other words.

The quality is OK, without really making my excited. It is run of the mill death metal which neither offend me or brightens my day. Pretty good it is, but also pretty dull. Dull metal.

2 stars The debut album from this French death metal combo....... is a death metal album.

A pretty straight talking death metal album it is too. The vocals is the typical growls. The music is pretty standard death metal anno 1995 which leans pretty heavy on Suffocation. It is more melodic though than their countrymen in Loudblast and not anywhere near grindcore. The rhythms, speed and growls are in the Suffocation mode. The guitar solos and some of the guitar riffs is actually leaning towards Death and in particular; Iron Maiden. Death metal light, in other words. Less calories, more taste.

Unfortunate, the taste bit leaves a lot to be desired. None of the songs here raises it's head above decent. There is nothing here I have not heard by other melodic death metal bands and the novelty is wearing a bit thin now. But it is still a pretty OK album which metal heads may like more than a prog head and weaned of metal head like myself. For me, this is just decent and nothing more. This is only a collection item, I am afraid.
