3 stars Hawkwind Live is an entirely different band from Hawkwind Studio. The differences between both had always been present but, while in earlier years, live albums would feature songs they had recently released on the official albums (check Business Trip and Love In Space); the shows from 2000 onwards would only feature classic tracks from the various periods of the band.

With each new tour in the new millennium the set list changed. Plenty of live albums would follow covering a wide range of classic tracks. No wonder. With their longstanding career they have plenty of stuff to choose from. On Yule Ritual, the focus is on the late 70's early 80's period; say 1977-1981: Levitation, Flying Doctor, Motorway City are the highlights but also Lighthouse and Hurry on Sundown work really well.

It's a fine live album that fans will want to hear. For casual Hawkwind listeners, the live album from the ensuing year called Canterbury Fayre would be of bigger interest: 2 CDs with a focus on the Levitation and the Warrior on the Edge of Time albums.

4 stars This solid set from a festive season concert from 2000 finds Hawkwind focusing not on their more recent material, but archival stuff - largely hailing from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Simon House and Tim Blake rejoining on violin and synthesiser respectively may have had something to do with this. A few earlier cuts make it in - in particular, Michael Moorcock gets phoned up in Texas so he can deliver deranged renditions of the Warrior At the Edge of TIme and Sonic Attack monologues. With the best of late-1990s live Hawkwind already largely being captured on the Love In Space album, it's fun to hear this iteration of the band revisit this earlier 1976-1982 period, resulting in a unique set.

4 stars This is a very good live album but it takes a few plays to get used to the very heavy bass recording. There is a good selection of songs on this album but I feel that the following tracks let it down a bit, "Flying Doctor", "Lighthouse"( Tim Blake who in my opinion does not seem the right pers ...
