Progressive Biography

What do you want to know and what are you looking here for anyway?

I've been a follower of the Progressive Rock since the day before it had a name, (I think it was a Thursday), since before pods had eyes, from the time when a disc had a radius of six-inches (~152.5 mm) and was black and came in a neat cardboard sleeve painted by Roger Dean, from a time when a pair of loons and a cheesecloth kurti were absolutely de rigueur and everyone smelt of patchouli oil, (yes, it was a Thursday, I remember it well, Top Of The Pops was on the TV), when Canterbury was just a town in Kent and Post Rock was just a brick with a note tied to it. Sure I?ve strayed from the oily way, dipped my toes in the limpid pool that is gothic rock and the miasma that is metal - from the black stuff, succumbing to the pull of the dark side, for I'm not tie-dyed in the wool, resistant to change, stuck in the past that passed me by. Nor am I a relic hunter ever seeking the long-lost lost long player, I can wait, sooner or later it will be re-released back into the wild, remake/remodel remastered and reissued in every sense of the word. In every tangerine dream home a heart of the sunrise.

Not a collector then, though the collection is massive and growing by the day, a music lover, a tru-fan. A musician who cannot play, but not frustrated in any way, the voices in my head sing such sweet music in irrational meters, a mingling of memories and invention.

I could name names, list my lists; finger my fingers, but what would be the point of that? To know that I am a PINK FLOYD fanboy would gain you nothing other than a small piece of inconsequential knowledge. To know that the sound surrounds the icy waters underground would impress no one at any party I?ve ever been invited to, and I?ve been to a few, some they even let me in through the door without knowing that I admire the mavericks: the HAMMILLs and the GABRIELs, the LUCASSENs and the WILSONs of this proggy world of ours. Kudos free, no power-ups, no special skills, no secret weapons. Zilch. Just music.

So, Crossover-Prog (or Xover if I want to be down with the boys in the lab), my chosen team, the old: Art Rock, the good old Art Rock ? to many, the front door of Prog, the calling card that says ?Hey, I?m on the radio, listen to me.? Push gently at this door, tentative, attentive and retentive, listen and absorb. I did. It was the MOODY BLUES who opened that door for me: To the next door we came; Love of music showed in everything we heard.

Enjoy. I do.
