Progressive Biography

I'm Scott Blackwood. Born and raised Californian, I'm a professional schoolteacher and choir director. I have a BA in Music Education. I have a beautiful wife, a daughter of 4, a son of 2, and an unborn baby due in March. I am a convert to Catholic Christianity (and like most millennials who are Catholics, I love tradition). My hobbies (other than prog) include snowboarding, surfing, and reading philosophy, theology, and politics. And I love singing Gregorian Chant.

Progressive rock is a deep and powerful passion in my life. I was raised with rock music of a more creative or heavier nature, with my parents often playing Rush, Kansas, Supertramp, Scorpions, and Al Stewart at home or in the car. During my Junior year in high school, my best friend Justin gave me Close to the Edge for Christmas. Since that time in my life, progressive rock has become a driving force and inspiration for me pursuing music as a career. There are few if any styles within progressive rock on this site that I don't really love, and only a few of the hundreds of bands I've heard so far do I find irksome sounding.

Since I started my musical education, I've greatly expanded my horizons to the wonders and creativity of classical music, especially sacred choral music and jazz music. In other words, there are very few highly rated composers in prog, jazz, and classical or hybrids of the genres that I don't borderline adore. I believe in the value of artistic integrity, and that "good" music can be defined as music that stands the test of time. I believe that today's really great progressive rock is the modern form of artistic music, and that it is the classic music of tomorrow.

All-Time favorite artists and my favorite works of theirs:

Classical
Beethoven - Missa Solemnis (Great Mass), The Nine, piano sonatas
Monteverdi - Hymns to the Blessed Virgin, Madrigals, the opera L'Orfeo
Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring, Petrushka, and Firebird Suite
Vivaldi - Choral works
Byrd - Masses & Motets

Jazz
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme, Giant Steps, My Favorite Things
Bill Evans - Explorations, Waltz for Debbie
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire, Inner Mounting Flame
Return to Forever: Hymn to the Seventh Galaxy, Return to Forever

Prog Rock
Rush - Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, A Farewell to Kings
Yes - Close to the Edge, Relayer, Fragile
