JA debut is a nice folk rock album but it is only marginal in indicating the future progress of the band. Obviously influenced by the phenomenal THE BYRDS, "Takes Off" picks up the familiar pieces from blues/folk/rock/beat and delivers some excellent songs - Balin's first remarkable hit "Come Up The Years" or nice cover of traditional "Tobacco Road". Still it is not an essential record, so the newcomers are advised to skip it in favor of the sophomore "Surrealistic Pillow" follow-up.
