3 stars Mussorgsky would be proud.

For those familiar with his most famous of works, there is little introduction needed. However, as a newcomer, perhaps to both the composer and to Mekong Delta, a little background info is needed. Mekong Delta essentially was a collection of musicians under contract in the beginning, who took false names to get around their contracts with the German music industries. The band has always had interest in classical compositions, as can be seen in their selections in albums past throughout their career. Mussorgsky's original is essentially a piano suite that has taken form in a variety of arrangements, perhaps the most famous at this site would be ELP's rendition (which differs greatly from the originial).

Now that we have some background, on to the music. This is a true to form recording of the original, but it is much less "progressive metal" than expected. Yes, their are guitars/drums/etc., but they are much less prominent in the mix than Mekong Delta albums typically have. Compared to the band's rendition of Night on a Bare(Bald) Mountain, this is quite tame. I guess it would be most important to listen to this album with somewhat of an open mind, given that some might see it as an ugly version of a timeless piece of music. Mekong Delta take this with the utmost seriousness and everything is played to perfection. If you're looking for a modern version of a classical composition that is true to form, or just wanting some great jam music, I strongly recommend this re-working.
