4 stars Listening diary 6th September 2021: Sólstafir - Köld (post-metal, 2009)

This was my introduction to Sólstafir, and although it's not my favourite of theirs now, it probably does stand as a good overview of their mixes of sounds. The grimy, gritty take on post-metal is at the core, with fortunate aversion to the annoying sludge metal overtones that filtered into too many post bands of this era - but there are also allusions to their black metal roots, their hardcore punk influences and even some post-punk moods. It's varied across its length too, with instrumentals, rockers, slow burners and all sorts of types of vocals cropping up, but all with a fairly consistent and singular aesthetic.

7.5 (9th listen)
