![]() First of all. If you like Keyboard oriented prog such as ELP or Genesis, Ys in in all probability an album you will want to look out for. Personally, however, it leaves a lot to wish for. "YS" is a complex and chaotic recording. There is usually a lot going on, and there is a lot of good musicianship throughout. There is also a definitive aura of progressiveness and ambition about the album, and when it gets going, it really gets going, like a huge panzer armadillo crossed with sonic the hedgehog. Still, despite the high velocity and various interesting instruments, "YS" rarely gets really rocking, and you have to keep attention on it constantly to keep some sort of track. I reckon that if i had listened to "YS" a year ago, i would have loved it, but since then my tastes have sort of regressed into the more classic rock-area, and i would choose any album by the Who or The Beatles before this to listen to for my own personal enjoyment. Another reason why i'm not as fond of "YS" as i whould be could be because the lyrics are in italian and, while i don't really mind that, there is a certain element of the music which is lost for me by not hearing what the singer is singing about. Even lyrics which are so and so can contribute a lot to the overall atmosphere of an album, so albums in italian certainly have a certain disadvantage that way. Still, i can see that it is a very interesting record, and one that many will love, especially since ELP has such a huge fanbase on the archives, but, unfortunately, it doesn't do as much for me as i believe it should. Recommended for anyone, but expect something very technical and rather cold.
