4 stars This was the album which made ELP a household name. If you hadn't bought an album by them before, you certainly grabbed this one. It was released the same day as "Tales from Topographic Oceans" by Yes and I remember the local record shop selling copies of each album to every discerning rock fan from two big stacks on the front desk ( them were the days). Personally I thought the track "Benny the Bouncer" let the side down and the vocal passages of "Karn Evil 9" went on too long. Nevertheless, a powerfull album which surpassed "Trilogy" released in the same year. Strangely, the album did not include the track "Brain Salad Surgery" which was eventually given away free as a floppy vinyl seven inch single with one of the leading music magazines at time (I think it was New Musical Express). ......."Brain salad surgery ..it works for you ...it'll work for me-ee"
