The Lost Chord
5 stars 9.0/10 Incredible

Wow, well, let me first start off by saying this band is incredible, innovative, and full of genius and excitement. Gong is in development here actually, and not the "epic" line-up we will find on the next few albums. But the music on Camambert is brilliant for the most part. This is jazz on drugs, whacked out of proportion yet still coherent and concise, Gong is full of strangeness but in a fantastic way that just makes you love them to death. Camambert is the first true album I found this on, where you can really see a unique image come into play.

This album, in my opinion, is the real start to the Gong Quadrilogy (as I would call it because it is the first album in a "trilogy" of 4 albums? XD!) Anyway, this album shows the craziness behind Daevid Allen which I love, and the craziness of Gilli Smith which I don't love so much! Pip Pyle is a great drummer and his style on here is just awesome. My personal favorite tracks include "Fohat Digs Holes...", "Can't Kill Me", and "Tropical Fish Selene"...these songs are just bad ass and amazing, pure Gong stuff. I could certainly do without some stuff on here, especially Gilli Smith on Dynamite...this could be disturbing to most, don't let your parents listen that's for sure. So it isn't quite perfect even for what it tries to achieve, I think the band needs some better direction at this time, quiet down Gilli a little bit and get some of that Fohat and Tropical Fish going more-so...and they will, and they create some masterwork pretty soon after!

Give this one a try if you really, REALLY have an open ear...I mean, this stuff is incredibly inaccessible, probably some of the whackiest music I have ever heard at times. It is still Jazz at it's base level, though, so there is surely alot to be enjoyed by jazz lovers. Awesome stuff!! "Your finger on the trigger and your body burnin' up...! Camambert Electrik!!"
