Machine Messiah
4 stars This performance is a pretty thorough cross-section of the Blackfield catalogue, covering just about everything from the first 2 albums. The performances are very solid and you can see how involved Aviv Geffen is with the singing. I thought he only did lead vocals on 1 or 2 songs per album, but on the DVD he sings lead on at least 6 of the tracks. The band comes out rocking for the first seven tracks before shifting gears to showcase Aviv on "Glow" and the true Blackfield 2-piece lineup of Steven and Aviv on the Alanis Morrisette cover of "Thank You". The whole band resumes for "Epidemic" and doesn't let up until they have finished the 18 song set. My only minor complaint is that they did an encore performance of "Once" which they opened the show with. They could have performed a song like "Scars", "Summer", or "This Killer" instead, but maybe they just wanted to keep the setlist as heavy as possible for the live disc. The performance was mixed by Steven Wilson, so the audio quality is top notch. Overall I give this 4.25 stars.
