3 stars "Blue Öyster Cult" is the eponymously titled debut full-length studio album by US hard rock act Blue Öyster Cult. The album was released through Columbia Records in January 1972. Blue Öyster Cult was formed in 1967 as Soft White Underbelly. The band name was changed a couple of more times until the band finally opted for the Blue Öyster Cult monicker in 1971. While the band initially was a psychedelic tinged rock act, they had adopted a more pure hard rock sound by the time of the release of the debut album.

It´s not the most hard edged hard rock released in 1972 though (this is not exactly Black Sabbath styled heaviness), as the music also features many classic rock elements and the presence of keyboards/piano also give the music a less hard rocking sound. When that is said Blue Öyster Cult is still a nicely hard rocking group (tracks like "Sceams" and "Workshop Of The Telescopes" are for example pretty heavy and hard rocking and a track like "She's As Beautiful As A Foot" features a dark and heavy atmosphere), and their blues rock rooted rock style is both effective and memorable. They can certainly write both hard rocking riffs and hook laden melodies.

Blue Öyster Cult is a well playing band too and lead vocalist/guitarist Eric Bloom has a strong voice and a passionate delivery. Featuring a powerful, organic, and detailed sound production, this debut album features both quality and promise, and Blue Öyster Cult were arguably off to the good start with this one. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
