Megaphone of Destiny
5 stars This album goes where freak out! couldn't go. From the start 'Ladies and gentleman, the president of the United States' we know that something really funny and ironic is about to happen. And it does. Not only ironic but also deadly serious. It starts off with Plastic People, one of my favourite zappa's songs (even if it is the old I-IV-V that Zappa so much sneered at) even if it here is completely broke with jokes and irony. A song about nazis that run our towns. Did the name Bush came into your mind? Then procedes into a big concept album with duke of prunes (beautiful melody and arrangment), call any vegetable (speed and humour, nice saxophone playing by underwood), until brown shoes don't make it (with orchestra) and america drinks and goes home (the kind of film song). This album never stops. It is a continuous flowing of melodies, rhythm, invention, improvisations (as in ritual dance of the young pumpkin). When i first listened to this record i was already into Zappa's music and I was continuously amazed by the inteligence of it. It is the first FZ's absolute masterpiece. To think that it was recorded in 1966 makes all music obsolete, even nowadays... I give it a 5 star because i can't give it a 6!
