TROUT MASK REPLICA

An interesting adventure to the edge of musical madness, it is, but a true classic, it ain't. While I don't fully grasp the entire album (not that I think you are supposed to anyway) I do enjoy much of this album, especially lyrically. I do have to say, however, that the sections in which the good Captain speak-sings without any accompanying music came across as more offputing than anything else. And while some might not care for the near lack of any recognizable musical structure instrumentally I personally don't mind it at all and find it satisfying, not mind blowing, but satisfying. In addition, having Frank Zappa as producer and getting to hear from him on several tracks is a giant plus but all being said the album is good, not excellent. Trout Mask Replica receives 3.4 lazier beans out of 5.
