3 stars Good to see Steely Dan added to the Progarchives. They certainly belong there, though this first album wasn't enough to do it. When I first heard the album back in 1972 I was attracted by the inventiveness compared to so much pop rock. Mssrs Becker and Fagen where apparently caught between the record company, the need to pay the bills, and their drive to create interesting music. The album is a bit of a hodge-podge -- some good songs and some not so -- still, better than a lot out there. It was obvious the guys had something going on under the surface. The next album showed it. 3.5 Stars.
