3 stars Jadis' "Fanatic" album is a solid set of IQ-sounding neo-progressive rock in the standard post-Genesis/Marillion style. The performances are strong throughout, and Jadis' command of mood is as impressive as any of the sub-genre's standard bearers. Alternately atmospheric and propulsive, the instrumental textures and melodic designs are often exceptionally engaging by neo-prog standards, sure to appeal to hardcore fans and possibly attractive to neo-prog neophytes, as well.

Despite (or perhaps because of?) Jadis' polished professionalism, the album is not powerfully adventurous, and its compositions lack distinctive hooks or energy. As a result, "Fanatic" does not inspire devotion the way the best sets from IQ, Marillion, Genesis, etc. do. Jadis are no pretenders in neo-prog, but ultimately, "Fanatic" is fine but not fantastic.
