3 stars Sons of Apollo is a super-gathering of five of one of the most respected musicians in the U.S. prog metal and hard rock community. Given that it's a brainchild of Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian, comparisons to Dream Theater are inevitable. And there are a lot of similarities in the respective efforts to combine virtuostic technicality with accessible melodicism (and let's be honest - to the majority of the populace all of this sounds the same). But I wouldn't go as far as to label this a long-lost DT gem. The approach is more direct and industrial-sounding with less of the typical Dream Theater space breathers and solo trade-offs. Goes to show who the Elton John and Pink Floyd fan was in Dream Theater, Not Mike Portnoy. I think the goal here is to have some fun and jam away, which isn't a bad goal.
