5 stars It finally all came together for ELP with this recording, their landmark accomplishment. Brain Salad Surgery remains a cohesive set, brilliantly excecuted in composition and instrumentation. Emerson's sound was still rooted solidly with his Hammond, and for all it's sci-fi imagery there remained an analog animal earthiness in the glowing tubes within the organ and leslie's wooden cabinets. Sonically it's not perfect, yet for it's era it does hold up extremely well. Could they repeat this feat ? Despite the opportunities offered by advancing technology, they were never able to reach such lofty heights again. Brittle and buzzy, with Greg Lake's voice sadly fading from it's early glory, later efforts just helped to emphasize how special the earlier works really were. Fortunately we have this album, and it remains their Kind of Blue, or Love Supreme. I just love it !
