3 stars Bark is the sixth full-lenght studio album by American west coast rock act Jefferson Airplane. The band had enjoyed tremendous success with their previous four albums ( their debut was also succesful but not as succesful as those other albums) and toured extensively but a number of incidents ( including the birth of Grace Slick and Paul Kantnerīs daughter, the departure of founding member Marty Balin and drummer Spencer Dryden, a near fatal car accident which Grace Slick was involved in and the founding of their own record label called Grunt) meant that Bark was the first studio album by Jefferson Airplane in two years.

The style of music hasnīt changed much since Volunteers (1969) though as the basis in the music is still blues and american folk mixed with a bit of psychadelic rock. The folk influence isnīt as strong as it was in the beginning of their career but can still be heard in a song like Third Week In The Chelsea. The blues influence is heard everywhere on the album but especially in the way guitarist Jorma Kaukonen plays. Listen to him dual with Papa John Creach who plays the violin on the instrumental Wild Turkey. Thatīs some powerful bluesy stuff right there. The vocals are strong as ever. Pationate and biting female and male vocals. Thereīs also a rather avant garde rock song in Never Argue With A German If You're Tired Or European Song which could be something Frank Zappa had written.

The musicianship is excellent throughout the album and the warm and pleasant production suits the music well.

Bark is another great album by Jefferson Airplane and I am seriously beginning to doubt if this band can do anything wrong. A BIG 3 star rating is deserved. As with all previous albums by the band I find it hard to decide wether to give a 4 or a 3 star rating but donīt let the rating distract you Bark is a really good album.
