3 stars All is Dream is the fifth full-length studio album by American rock act Mercury Rev. While not being a full blown fan of the band I greatly enjoyed their previous two releases See You On The Other Side (1995) and Deserter's Songs (1998) which I found to be good alternative rock albums with some slight psychadelic and progressive tendencies. Suzanne Thorpe ( flute), Adam Snyder ( Wurlitzer piano, Mellotron, Hammond B-3 organ) and Jimmy Chambers ( harpsichord, clavinet, drums) have left the band since Deserter's Songs. Only one new member has been added in Jeff Mercel ( piano, drums). Mercury Rev is as a consequence only a four piece on All is Dream. Jonathan Donahue ( vocals, acoustic guitar), Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiack ( guitar) and Dave Fridmann ( Mellotron, bass) are the remaining members from Deserter's Songs. There are lots of guest musicians on the album that colours the music with for example violin, flute and strings.

The music is still alternative rock with slight psychadelic and progressive tendencies. The music is pleasant and warm and generally pretty simple in structure. The instrumentation on the songs are rich with string arrangements which really gives the music a beautiful atmosphere. The vocals are soft and pleasant. All 10 songs on the album are enjoyable but I wouldnīt call them excellent.

The musicianship and production are very professional. The album is very well sounding.

All is Dream is a worthy follow up to Deserter's Songs but it does not reach the heights of that excellent album IMO. Itīs definitely worth a 3 star rating though.
