SPACE REVOLVER

This Flower Kings CD has had some fine things said about it and I'm reviewing this after reviewing all the CD's released after it - Yep I'm going backwards in time. Well this CD DOESN'T have an EPIC !!! - It doesn't have a track anywhere near as good as "Monsters and Men" but it does have a few moments that eek it into the FOUR stars mark by the skin of it's teeth...... E.g The Guitar solo at the end of "Slave to Money" is just Stolte Genius and it's pushed by a solo at the end of the next track "A Kings Prayer" - these two tracks have excellent instrumental breaks. The instrumental "Rumble Fish Twist" is excellent with it's ELP ish organ work and extremely punchy and ballsy bass work and drumming. sumptuous keyboards and the guitar flourishes of Stolte make this a FOUR STAR track.. I also like the quirky Chicken Farmer Song and "Underdog". "The Monster within has a good ending but it's not as good as the opening track "I am the sun (Part 1)" - This is excellent then COMPLETELY SPOILED BY THAT POINTESS NOISE JAZZY BIT WITH THE "I left my heart in San Fransisco" dirge - If that bit had been replaced with a bit of Church organ - and then into the second part (which is excellent) but the second half is tainted by the silliness - I think I'll make my own version and cut that dirge out. However the second part is possibly my favourite (holistically) on the CD (I even love the quirky lyrics) - It finishes with an awesome archetypal prog crescendo of synths, bass and guitars - and this bit has the old prog juices flowing and takes this CD into 4.01 STARS.......
