4 stars I can see a strong piano songwriting influence here, maybe partly by Elton John? I hear that in some sequence chords and songwriting style. The keyboard mastermind Rick Wakeman sits on the piano before he joined Yes! The album is quite poppy, gone are agressive guitars and rocking rhythm sections. Melodies are elegant, singing is very good, fitting music. Not a surprise that this might be Bowie's most romantic album in his collection and the most conventional one.

Some songs like "Eight line poem" are quite pastoral with piano and voice building the foundation. "Life on Mars?" is one of the most known works here although I don't find melody very thrilling, however I like the emotional high-vocal pitch and tasty spare guitar solo.

"Kooks" is a playful and cheerful tune that could be remotely traced to innocent McCartney tunes. Tributes to Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol are interesting; the first one can be quite immediately traced to Bob Dylan thanks to voice and style. Now at this part of the album, piano has almost disappeared and you hear acoustic guitars prevailingly. The last track is a nice acoustic guitar duett and a bit unconventional singing style.

A great folk-rock pop album! 3.5 stars
