3 stars Well, I thought this was the jazz-fusion band with more or less the same name. I was wrong.

Maybe the title A Canterbury Tale should had alerted even my dead braincells. I seriously doubt if the jazz-fusion band has even been anywhere near Canterbury, Kent. What I got instead was a double CD compilation of this fine folk-rock band from........ wait for it........ Canterbury, Kent. Although not a part of the Canterbury Scene, the female member has played in National Health and Hatfield & The North. Which broke up the band, incidently.

This compilation is the best of this band and there is some good stuff here. Spirogyra does pretty standard folk-rock with both some melancholic songs and some lively songs. They have been compared to The Pogues. I agree, but I would also add Fairport Convention, Strawbs and Bob Dylan (his folk-rock albums). The quality is good throughout. I have to admit that folk-rock is not my favorite music. But this double CD has spread warmth and happiness in my house. I think this is a band worth checking out. I will take a note of their album titles in case I accidently buy albums from this jazz-fusion band. That would be very ironic.......
