The Runaway
3 stars Please take note: Muse's first DEMO

The Newton Abbot Demo was Muse's first attempt at recording an album, or EP to be exact. Some songs on this EP had a name change and became massive hits, some became buried treasures, and some were justifiably left out. heavy drumming and bashy guitar chords are what this EP, and Muse in general, are all about.

Falling With the Crowd's opening chords are what you hear as soon as you turn up the volume on your speakers. High EQed guitar and vocal tracks, and crash-cymbal drum beats keep going all through the song while Matt Bellamy's voice is first discovered. Some songs, like Boredom, are songs that you would wish were on highly successful albums by the same band and would succeed as much as the other songs on that album. Don't say that Boredom is not a good song, because, I can't let you pretend, it is.

Anyway, the demo is good, but some songs are excesses, the recording quality isn't that great, the band is still fresh, and Bellamy has yet to have grown to be the melodramatic vocalist he is now. This EP isn't so good, so I'm giving it a 3/5, but ever since Muse's debut album, every album has amazing amounts of excellency.
