3 stars Comprehensive video overview

"The Thrill of it All" is an apt title for this chronological overview of the band's video career, mixing promotional videos, live performances, and television appearances. Roxy Music at times can be a very difficult group to conveniently categorize for people, or even describe. I personally consider them simply one of the most intelligent incarnations of pop music ever. Intelligent, and yet deviously, deliciously, devilishly.....fun fun fun! They are also an emotional rollercoaster taking the listener from moments of wailing rock solos to somber, heart wrenching ballads, to light and danceable hits. All of the above are presented here in quantity. First you have the promotional videos and I admit the MTV era promos are pretty hard for me to stomach more than once, though Ferry's fashion sense will keep you yucking it up throughout. The television appearances can be equally grueling in some cases especially when the band is lip-syncing rather than performing---once I see a band is not actually performing I just hit the skip button. The payoffs are the truly live clips which dish out what you crave Roxy Music for: great song-writing, passionate performance, and a surprise around every corner. I believe many of the live tracks are from the '82 French show featured in "The High Road" video and these are super. The live version of "Song for Europe" is quite simply one of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear. Ferry has the ability to deliver vocals that melt the heart of any person, male or female. He's a craftsman, a master of the emotional vocal, not unlike Frank Sinatra in his control even though the music is so very different. Live versions of "Avalon" and "While my heart is still beating" can equally enrapture even casual fans. So for a good historical overview this is a decent package but for the real Roxy experience, you are better off finding their two exquisite live DVDs "The High Road" or "Live at the Apollo." With the live discs you will get the complete live Roxy experience the way it was intended, not broken apart with some mediocre material.
