4 stars I thought Great Escape was an excellent album, but Ellengæst may just be better. Crippled Black Phoenix continue to create their own genre of music that has elements of progressive rock, post rock, alternative rock, and everything in between. The long atmospheric tracks are plentiful, and excellent samples bring the artistic value as a signature part of their sound. Just having random people talking from some other recording, and blending it to music is such a brilliant and artistic sound. I love the way Justin Greaves fuses together all of those elements to create something special. The female vocals from Belinda Kordic in Ellengæst sometimes remind me of something from Siouxsie Soux or This Mortal Coil. It creates so much diversity in the sound of this album, that it does not get boring. Overall, this is a very impressive release, and one of the best albums to come out this year. Any fan of Crippled Black Phoenix will find a lot to enjoy here, so it is worth the investment to go on this adventure.
