3 stars A big surprise, to say at least.

I had absolute no expectations when I started to listen to this album. I thought this was going to be a pretty horrid experience. I was proven wrong.

Remove all the hype and all the weirdness surrounding Gong. Put your headphones on and listen very carefully to this album. What you find is some simple pop/rock songs with some added weirdness. The middle part of this album is avant-garde noodling. The rest has some very good songs. The best of them is the hypnotic Glad To Sad To Say (whatever that means). The chorus is almost impossible to remove from my head. Can I have some brainsurgery, please ? The rest of the material is good melodic pop songs. And yes, these songs are a bit weird. This is after all Gong. Daevid Allan's vocals are excellent and the contributions from Gilli Smyth pretty weird. The instumentations on this album is pretty sparse and fitting for the songs.

I am both surprised and charmed into submission. This album is good ! I did not expect this from Gong's debut album and the co-founder of Soft Machine. It seems like I have underestimated Mr. Allen and Gong.
