Beautiful Scarlet

Since this album has so many reviews I'm just going to fire off my issues with this album.

The talking drum and easy money.

I've never been a fan of King Crimsons standard instrumentals which is something Talking Drum is. I find them boring, too much guitar ripping and devoid of anything memorable. Some of King Crimsons instrumentals surpass their brethren like the highly evolving Larks Tongue In Aspic Pt 1 which moves through shrieking guitar to pastoral violin. Others do not, like the forgettable Talking Drum.

Easy money is basically 21st Century Schizoid Man 3.0 but less good and I don't love the original tune either so my opinion of this rocker is not particularly high. I think one must enjoy rock to enjoy this track which I don't think I do.

Overall the other tracks are mostly pretty good but only Exiles I would consider excellent. Therefore 3/5 because there is insufficient quality material on this album. I'd recommend the following two albums over this one as they take the same concept but really run with it, Starless And Bible Black adds some variety and Red focuses on the harsher angular moments.
