4 stars This is a great album by Coryell, the first one in the most typical fusion style, more accessible than the previous "Barefoot boy" or "Spaces" but still raw and outspoken enough. All players are in good sync, saxophone is better aligned with the rest of the band than ever before. Mike Mandel provides great background electric piano, a counterpart to Coryell jazz dexterity and Marcus free improvisations. Thanks to saxophone, the sound bears similarity to Soft Machine, except for the guitar sound. Compositions are quite good with focus on improvisation and feelings. "Ruminations" is an excellent fast-paced tour de force by guitar and saxophone. "Scotland" features an attractive motive a la Soft Machine. Coryell has no problem to switch to riffing or rock guitar from the more jazz licks. The title track has excellent fusion drums and guitar/saxophone soloing. "Beggar's Chant" attracts attention due it drum pattern and the guitar effects. This song has a constant groove. Great fusion album!
