5 stars Review #112

Being recorded between "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" and "Tarkus" and launched between "Tarkus" and "Trilogy", and having a tracklist that even when it wasn't composed by the members of the band, is completely alien to their studio albums and with the right edition it could pass as a studio album (as King Crimson's "Starless and bible black" did), "Pictures at an exhibition" is one of the most indispensable records in ELP's discography.

Most of the pieces of this album were composed by Russian classical composer Modest Mussorgsky but with the unique Power Trio Rock played by ELP; the arrangements are just great. A lot of Progressive Rock bands took a lot of inspiration from Classical Music and this record is a great example of that. "The sage" is the only original piece of the album: it was composed by Greg Lake and it is one of his greatest acoustic guitar songs. The last song is actually an original composition of Tchaikovsky, "Nut Rocker" was played with the most explosive Rock arrangements the band never played before (or after).

An absolutely indispensable live Progressive Rock/Classical Music album.
